Six Indian governments honored him with the Padma Shri Jawaharlal Nehru award for international understanding, and the highest award of the Baird Ratna community in India. In 1962, he was honored with the Ramon Magsaysay Award for international understanding for his recognition of the desperate poor in 1971.
